INTERVIEWS
-
Interviews can be nerve-wracking but they’re also your chance to make a meaningful connection with a family and to get a sense of whether the role feels right for you. Whether it’s online or in person the goal is the same: show up prepared, professional and genuinely interested in the family and their children.
Here’s how to make the best possible impression:
Before the Interview
Prepare your setup if it's online. Find a quiet, private space with a neutral background and good lighting. Position your camera at eye level and check that Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp video is working properly before the call.
Have your CV and documents ready. Keep your CV to hand and make sure it’s up to date, clear and free of spelling errors. If you have printed references or certificates keep them in a tidy folder for easy sharing.
Double check your references. Make sure contact details for your referees are accurate and current. Written references are a bonus. Bring those along if you have them.
Presentation Matters
Dress neatly and simply. Think clean, comfortable and practical. Something you’d feel happy wearing around children but still looks polished.
Be warm and confident. A friendly smile, calm energy and clear communication go a long way. If the interview is in person a polite handshake and good eye contact help set the tone.
Speak clearly and be yourself. Try to slow down, speak with care and stay positive. Be honest but avoid criticising past employers. Challenges in previous jobs can always be reframed as learning experiences.
Show Your Experience
Talk through your duties and achievements. Share how you’ve gone above and beyond in past roles, how you’ve supported a child’s development or handled specific situations.
Bring certificates and qualifications. These are reassuring to parents and show your commitment to professional development.
Connect with the Family
Ask thoughtful questions. Show genuine interest in the children, their routines, personalities, likes and dislikes. Ask about any allergies or medical needs so you’re fully informed.
Focus on the relationship first. Don’t ask about salary, hours or accommodation in the first interview. Those will be discussed later with our support. Your goal is to understand whether this family is the right match for you and for them to feel the same.
If the children are present, engage gently. Introduce yourself, be warm and ask simple, friendly questions. Building a natural connection with the children is just as important as impressing the parents.
At NANNIED, we’re here to support you through every step of the interview process. If you're unsure or would like extra guidance beforehand, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
You've got this. Let your warmth, professionalism and calm confidence shine through.
TRIAL PERIOD
-
Beginning a new nanny role is exciting, but like any new position, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. It may take a few days or even weeks to settle in, especially as you build relationships with the children and find your rhythm within the family’s routine.
This is completely normal. Be patient with yourself, stay consistent and approach each day with calm confidence. Your presence, care and professionalism will speak volumes as you settle into the role.
Here are a few practical tips to help you get off to a smooth start:
NANNIED's Settling-In Tips
Learn the house rules and stick to them. If the family has different cultural, religious or lifestyle practices, show respect and openness. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or training.
Know your duties. These should be clearly outlined in your nanny contract along with your working hours, pay schedule and time off. Use any quiet moments (such as when children are napping or at school) to carry out your nursery duties.
Safety first. Find out where the fuse box, stopcock and first aid kit are kept. Ensure you have all emergency contact numbers saved and easily accessible.
Understand the children’s needs. Keep a list of allergies, dietary restrictions and any medical conditions. If medication is involved, make sure you’re trained to administer it safely. If an EpiPen is kept in the house, you should be confident in using the specific type they have.
Prioritise building a relationship with the family, taking an interest and showing willing to learn. A smile goes a long way and people want you to feel comfortable. Try to enjoy your time with the family by showing them who you are as a person in equal measure to who you are as a professional. At NANNIED, we feel connection comes first and this is the way to begin building it.
